GROUNDED: How connection with nature can improve our mental and physical wellbeing

By Ruth Allen

My first book was published by Welbeck in 2021 and has since has critical and commercial success in the UK, US, Australia, France, Germany and the Netherlands. Grounded is a 192-page beautifully photographed hardback book, exploring over 8 chapters how we can further our relationship with nature for better overall health. It’s voice is warm and companionable - a book to keep on your bedside table or take outside on a wander.

GROUNDED has featured in BBC Wildlife Magazine, Countryfile Magazine and Ecopsychology UK amongst others.

It has received a sell-out audience at Kendal Mountain Literature Festival, as well as being featured at Bradford Lit Fest.

It has also been featured on BBC6 Music with Lauren LaVerne, Ramblings with Clare Balding and several times on local BBC radio.

  • “This book was recommended to me by a friend as a source of inspiration for practical activities to help the body find improved wellbeing through activities in nature. Ruth's style of writing brings this all to life with simplicity, clarity, inner wisdom, and a light touch of theory. The images in the book set the scene so beautifully as well. It is more than a self-help book - it is a feast of opportunity for being in nature. A book I now have many post-it notes in and can use to support my personal well-being and workshops with others”

  • “I've read numerous books about (re)connecting with nature, many very good indeed, but Dr Ruth Allen's Grounded is the stand-out work. It is clearly written with love, compassion and clarity by someone with a deep understanding of the subject. I can be easily discouraged, I confess, by content that I find rather esoteric, but Grounded is accessible, engaging, intelligent and highly practical, encouraging both reflection and practice. I have returned to it many times and it has proven a constant source of comfort and stimulation as I instil and renew my connection to, and part in, nature.”

  • “I absolutely adored everything about this book. I brought it at a time in my life when my anxiety was growing and I wasn’t sure what to do. This booked helped me so much. Each page is stunningly beautiful too, the photographs were so calming. I would recommend for anyone who needs a little…grounding.”

  • “Book of the year for me. I watched a video ‘Here’ featuring the author, and was so pleased to see that she had released a book. The author’s way of being and the book Grounded, really resonated with me, and Grounded came along at a point when my spirits needed lifting. I love to be out in nature and I also love the grounding of solitude - Grounded reminded me of the importance of these things. It is definitely a ‘companion book’ - one of those books you treasure and return to time and time again. For this reason, I would recommend getting the hardback, which has been beautifully produced. It will live alongside my Jon Kabat-Zinn and Thich Nhat Hanh books. A companion with my other companions.”

  • “Great reminder of how as humans we are nature and not separate from nature. Written beautifully draws the reader along. As a bibliophile I found it physically a tactile book to hold a real joy to read. V useful for therapists too”
